Demons
Demons were considered to be angels who had been cast out of heaven for defying God. Each demon was associated with specific acts and sins and each was connected to a saint in heaven whose actions could override that of the demon.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, demonologists developed a complex hierarchy of demons in order to enable exorcists to identify demons and call upon the correct saint to drive the demons out of the possessed. As demons were thought to be fallen angels, their system of hierarchy mimicked that used to categorize angels.

Kora expected a chuckle from King or a reply of some kind, but there was nothing at all, just an awkward silence. Before she could repeat herself, King suddenly hit the brakes to avoid racing through a red traffic light and smashing his cab into a parked delivery truck. King saw the most ghastly image of a man, he had ever seen in his rearview mirror. Even more repulsive than the demons in his village. Lucifer appeared sitting next to Kora long enough to be seen, but not heard. He slid his claws onto Kora’s left and gave her a little squeeze. The air changed into an odd and tangible taste of rotten eggs. Kora sat back wiping the hair from her eyes, taking deep breaths to help with the shock, knowing it must be her lucky day. As with her recent run of back luck, she should be lying dead on the wet tarmac waiting to be rolled into a body bag. The windshield would have given her a new face-lift consisting of cuts decorated with sparkling glass chips, broken eye sockets, twelve missing teeth, and a cupful of brain cells protruding from her skull.
